a great community event and what better day to view the bulbs planted in the Paddock?

Watlington In Bloom is an RHS Thames and Chilterns 'In Bloom' Group doing their best to achieve the criteria broadly laid out above by the RHS.  Due to our privileged location in an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty (AONB) which includes two Sites of Special Scientfic Interest(SSSI) and some some Road Verge Nature Reserves (RVNRs), it seemed a natural progression for us to concentrate on our strengths for the Britain in Bloom Campaign, i.e. environmental, or 'Green' issues and to build upon that by trying to broaden the other categories such as Horticulture and Community as best we could.  Our tactics so far cannot be too far off the mark as in our first year at the Thames & Chilterns RHS Britain in Bloom awards ceremony in 2010, we achieved a coveted Silver Guilt award and best in category (Large Village) and in 2011, jaws dropped as we achieved an amazing Gold award and again best in category.  In 2012 we again achieved the coveted Gold award and best Large Village and this time our jaws hit the floor again as we were awarded the best overall Community Participation Award in the Thames & Chilterns.

Britain in Bloom is an all-inclusive campaign, organised by the RHS, that encourages communities of all sizes to make positive and lasting improvements to their local areas for the benefit of local people. The campaign is the largest of it kind in Europe and incorporates floral features, permanent planting, wildflower meadows, planting for nature, fruit and vegetable gardening and much, more.

Other core elements include cleanliness and tackling issues of litter, graffiti, vandalism and anti-social behaviour. Entries are encouraged to involve all sectors of the community such as town centre management, businesses, community groups, volunteers and schools to boost civic pride and help retain a local identity. Britain in Bloom also promotes good practice in the environment by encouraging recycling, the establishment of conservation areas and other sustainable projects. They encourage all communities to get involved to help create safer, cleaner and greener local environments.
